Project One - The Cognitive Foundations of Language

 Robert N. St. Clair

This section discusses the renaissance of metaphorical thought within the second generation of cognitive psychology. It explains why metaphorical thought has taken center stage in linguistic theory. Instead of claiming that ideas are organized around words, the new framework contends that ideas are organized around metaphorical structures. This shift in theory means that the role of analogical thinking has taken on a new significance within contemporary models of cognitive linguistics.

Metaphor is a form of analogical thinking that enables individuals to use their current experiences with objects, people, thoughts, and things to create new objects, ideas of people, innovative ideas, and new things. It is a movement from the known to the unknonwn.
